The Manufacturers Network has announced the launch of the Future of Manufacturing Foundation, a new independent charity created to inspire confidence, build skills, and open up opportunities for people to take their first steps into manufacturing and related industries.
Although founded with the support of the Manufacturers Network, the Foundation is a completely independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), governed by its own board of trustees. Its mission is to tackle barriers to employment and training by providing accessible, community-based opportunities that help people gain confidence, practical skills, and clearer routes into further education or work.
“We’re incredibly proud to see this new charity come to life,” said Mark Leeson, Chair of the Future of Manufacturing Foundation. “The Foundation has grown out of the same values that drive the Manufacturers Network - a belief that manufacturing is not just about technology and processes, but about people, potential and community. This is an independent organisation with its own mission, but it reflects everything we stand for.”
The Foundation’s trustees include experienced leaders from industry and education who have seen first-hand the importance of early engagement, confidence building and mentoring in helping people reconnect with opportunity.
Leeson continued: “This isn’t about replacing existing training providers - it’s about bridging the gap. Too many people have the potential but not the confidence to take that first step. We’ll provide the encouragement and the connections that help them believe in themselves again.”
Working initially across Trafford and the wider North West area, the Foundation will collaborate with housing associations, community organisations and employers to reach residents who are currently out of work or education, and to connect them with industry-led opportunities.
Catherine Hook, Trustee, added: “Manufacturing is changing fast - it’s digital, creative, and full of potential. But if we want people to be part of it, we have to meet them where they are, not expect them to come to us. That’s exactly what this Foundation will do.”
The Future of Manufacturing Foundation has been registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), and operates independently from the Manufacturers Network. However, the two organisations share a common commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive manufacturing ecosystem - one that benefits businesses, communities, and future generations alike.
“This Foundation reflects what we’ve always believed,” said Leeson. “Real change happens when industry steps up, but lets communities lead. This isn’t corporate CSR it’s a long-term investment in people.”
The Foundation is now seeking to collaborate with local employers, housing associations, education providers and funders who share its vision for inclusive growth and opportunity.
